Here’s what he had to say.

Tell us about your background in photography. Did you study it in school or just pick up a camera and run with it?

I picked up my dad’s camera, an old Minolta SLR, after I broke my ankle skating this spot on the Belgian coast. I was 15. I started shooting my friends skateboarding, and eventually you just start shooting everything. I taught myself the basics through trial and error, and then ended up going to art school when I was 18.

What do you appreciate the most about working with black and white photography?

I always liked its simplicity. It’s very direct. You don’t need fancy gear to create a good photo. Some good light, find the shadows and shapes, and work with that.

What country in your travels has proven to be the most photogenic so far?

This is going to sound insane to some, but suburban/small town America is pretty interesting to me. It can look so surreal sometimes. Maybe because it’s so different from growing up in Belgium. The layout, the architecture, the people. So there’s that. But then obviously there’s cities like Paris and Barcelona that are absolutely amazing because of the architecture and the amount of people living there.

Have you ever had any mishaps on the road with gear, language barriers, or plans gone awry?

Not really. Lets hope I don’t jinx it here. When we were younger we would go on insane trips where you wouldn’t even camp, we would sleep in city parks, construction sites and such. So I would have to sleep with my gear as a pillow or triple wrap the straps around my arm so I would wake up if someone tried to jack me. Looking back that was definitely sketchy.

If you could travel to any spot in the world to shoot, where would it be and who would skate it?

I don’t have anywhere specific I’d like to go. Any place new is exciting. I haven’t been to London since I was really young. There’s a possible Chile trip on the horizon. That would be cool.
